  1. Using a magic circle or other method to create a closed hole, make (tr, ch) 8 times in a ring and all rounds end by sl st to starting ch/standing st.
  2. Can be worked either on right or wrong side which gives more texture – sl st to ch sp if necessary, work 3 tr into each ch sp = 24 sts. Break off.
  3. In new colour, work (2 tr) into the centre tr of a group of 3 tr, (1 dtr into the top of the treble from round 1 that was skipped in round 2, then work a tr into the bottom of the dtr) to make the pointy end of the “petals”. Repeat to end. Turn work If desired for more texture as pictured.
  4. Slip st if necessary to work into the dtrs & trs worked into them - *work (2trs) in the first to present, 1 tr into the sp between the dtr & tr worked into it, (2tr) into the other st. Skip the 2 trs worked into group of 3 tr & repeat from * to end = 40 sts. If it cups, you could add 1 ch between every second group of 5 & work corners into those = 44 sts. If that’s not enough, 1 ch could be added between every group = 48 sts. Break off.
  5. With new colour, make square – if worked with wrong side facing, work into BLO to make “petals” stand out. If right side facing, work into BBL (both back loops). Into a space between “petals” work 1 dc. *1dc into next 2, 1 htr into next 2, tr in next, into sp make corner – (dtr, tr into bottom of dtr, 2 ch, dtr into sp, tr into bottom of dtr), in next “petal” work tr in next, htr in next 2, dc next 2, dc in sp. Repeat to end.
  6. Work one row of 1 tr in ea st to corner sp, (2tr, 2 ch, 2tr). Can be worked with right or wrong side facing as pictured.

VARIATIONS

In round 3, a second colour can be used to separate the “petals”. Just start with the alternate colour for the 2 trs into the centre st & draw through the last time of the second st with the “petal” colour & work the dtr & tr to the last draw through & use the alternate colour to complete the st. Carry the other colour at the back of the work. Break off the alternate colour at the end of the row & secure firmly.

This variation on round 3 uses a cluster between the “petals” – with alternate colour, *yo, pick up a loop in first tr, draw thru 2 loops. Repeat for the next 2 tr, then draw thru all 4 loops. Draw the “petal” yarn through, work the dtr & tr completely then draw the alternate colour through. Needs a bit of ease after the cluster creating only one st sp.

If you wanted a continuous ring around the outside edge of the petals, the dcs worked into the spaces could be worked into BBL (both back loops) of a ch worked between “petals”.

Stable edge to stop stretch

Over time, the edge of a crochet blanket often gets fluted, stretched, even thin with use. To get around that, I usually add one or more rows to stabilise the edge. You’ve probably noticed that the smaller the stitch, the less “give” or... Continue →
