(I haven’t even looked at this for over ten years so hoping it all makes sense!)
STAR SQUARE - points are separate to background) -approx 13 cm - 5”.
WITH CREAM - work 15 dc into ch ring.
JOIN WHITE - sts will be worked around the body of each centre st, leaving the tops of sts at back for joining the background blue.
- 1 ch, sl st around body of next tr. 2 ch, (1 tr worked around next dc, 3 ch, 1 tr around same st), 1 dc around next. Rep to end.
- Sl st into each st to ch ring at point, (1 ch, 1 sc, 1 dc, 1 tr into ring, 3 ch, loosely sl st to top of last tr, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 sc into ch ring). Rep to end. FOLD DOWN STAR POINT SO YOU CAN SEE THE CIRCLE OF THE TOPS OF STS IN CENTRE. JOIN second darkest blue -
- work 2 dc into ea st of centre.
- 1 dc into next, 2 dc in next. Rep to end.
- 1 dc into next 2, 2 dc into next. Rep to end = 60 sts. SQUARE SHAPING - 1 sc into next 4, 1 hdc, 1 dc into next 2, (2 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr) into next. Rep to end. Work 1 row of dc around square.
SMALL MOON SQUARE - SAME SIZE AS STAR
WITH WHITE work 12 dc in a ch ring.
WITH CREAM
- 2 dc into each st.
- 1 dc, 2 dc in next. WITH CREAMY YELLOW
- 1 dc in next 2, 2 dc in next. WITH BLUE work shaping to square as for STAR Square.
CRESCENT SQUARE - SAME SIZE AS STAR
WITH BLUE work 12 dc into ch loop.
- 2 dc into each st.
- 1 dc, 2 dc in next. WITH CREAM OR WHITE
- 1 ch, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc in next, (1 dc, 2 dc in next) four times, 1 hdc, 3 sc, sl st to centre. Turn.
- Sl st into first 4 sts, 4 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc in next, 4 dc, 2 dc in next, 1 hdc, 4 sc, sl st into next. WITH BLUE work shaping to square as for STAR Square.
PLAIN STAR-SIZED SQUARES
Work (4 dc, 1 ch) four times into a chain loop.
NEXT - Work 1 dc into each and 5 dc into ea ch st to make corner.
Work another 3 rows the same.
LAST - Work one row of sc into ea st and 3 sc into ea corner st.
LARGE MOON SQUARE… approx 39 cm - 15” square.
WITH WHITE - 12 dc into ch ring.
- 2 dc into each st.
- 1 dc in next, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 2, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 3, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end. JOIN CREAM
- 1 dc in next 4, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 5, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 6, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 7, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end. JOIN CREAMY YELLOW
- 1 dc in next 8 , 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
- 1 dc in next 9, 2 dc into next. Rep from to end.
JOIN LIGHTEST BLUE for shaping to square.
- 3 sc, 5 hdc, 4 dc, 2 tr, 3 tr in next st, 3 tr in next, 2 tr, 4 dc, 5 hdc, 3 sc. Rep to end.
- 7 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 3 tr, 3 tr in next, 1 ch, 3 tr in next, 3 tr, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 7 sc. Rep to end.
- 1 dc in ea, working 5 dc in corner st. Work another 7 rows the same.
LARGE CRESCENT SQUARE - approx 15”
WITH DARKEST BLUE, work first 7 rows of moon square.
JOIN CREAM to an increase st.
- 4 sc, 3 hdc, 2 dc in next, 6 dc, 2 dc in next, 2 tr in next, 6 tr, (2 tr in next) 3 times, 6 tr, 2 tr in next, 2 dc in next, 6 dc, 2 dc in next, 3 hdc, 4 sc, sl st to cream. Turn.
- Sl st to first sc, 1 ch, 5 sc, 2 sc in next, 3 hdc, 4 dc, 2 dc in next, 7 dc, 2 dc in next, 7 tr, 2 tr in next, 7 tr, (2 dc in next) twice, 4 dc, 3 hdc, 2 sc in next, sl st to prev row. Break off. JOIN DARKEST BLUE to the increase st to the right of where cream starts.
- 4 sc, 3 hdc, 2 dc in next, 8 dc, 2 dc in next, 8 tr, 2 dc in next, 8 dc, 2 dc in next, 3 hdc, 16 sc, 3 hdc, 2 dc in next, 8 dc, 2 dc in next, 8 tr, 2 dc in next, 8 dc, 2 dc in next, 3 hdc, 4 sc. Work sc for any sts left.
- Work 1 row of dc, working an increase (2 dc in next) every 10th st. Work shaping to square same as MOON square.
PLAIN LARGE MOON/CRESCENT SQUARES
Work as for Plain Star Squares, leaving out LAST row.
Work 12 rows of dc into ea and 5 dc into corner st.
LAST - Work one row of sc into ea st and 3 sc into ea corner st.
Lynn suggested using glow-in-the-dark yarn for this project. That sounds great to me!! I suggest 4 shades of blue for depth - light royal blue for centre, dark royal blue for stars rows, dark navy for last row in star size and a blue/black for the outside row.
Rays can be embroidered on as per the pic and a face could be embroidered onto the moon if desired.
